Traffic Pollution Linked to Amyloid Plaque Formation, Alzheimer’s Disease
A specific type of traffic-related air pollutant known as fine particulate matter (PM2.5) may contribute to elevated levels of amyloid plaques in the brain, some new research has found. Amyloid plaques are a known biomarker for Alzheimer's disease, which indicates that exposure to PM2.5 may raise the risk of this common brain disorder.
PM2.5 is so named because it's classified as pollutant particles that are less than 2.5 microns in diameter. This type of particle is so small that it can cross the blood-brain barrier and enter the brain when inhaled, a trait thought to contribute to its potential toxicity.
The study involved analysis of brain tissue contributed by 224 donors with an average death age of 76. Exposure to PM2.5 was determined by using the donors’ home addresses prior to death. Overall, higher PM2.5 levels were linked to as much as an 87-100% higher risk of elevated plaque levels.
“This study really shows again that air pollution can affect every single organ in the body,” said Anke Huels, PhD, study author. “Most people know that air pollution can affect respiratory health and your lungs but are not aware about the effects on the brain and Alzheimer’s.”
Atlantic Diet Could Help Prevent Metabolic Syndrome
Following an Atlantic-style diet may reduce the risk of developing metabolic syndrome, a cluster of health factors – abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, high triglycerides, low HDL “good” cholesterol levels – that elevates the risk of diabetes and stroke, a recent study has found.
The Atlantic diet is a little-known traditional diet common in parts of Spain and Portugal. It focuses on consuming fresh and locally-sourced foods that are whole or minimally processed, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, and olive oil as well as fish, other seafood, meat, cheese, and milk.
The study was conducted in Spain and involved 250 families who were assigned to either the Atlantic diet group or a control group. The control group continued their normal diet and lifestyle, while the other group received cooking classes and education for following the Atlantic diet.
At the end of 6 months, the Atlantic diet group was significantly less likely to develop metabolic syndrome than the control group. In addition, those who entered the study with metabolic syndrome were less likely to develop another component of the disease while following the Atlantic diet.
